We’ve Moved

Hi Pals! Just dropping a note to say that we’ve moved our blog! Still interested in seeing our love notes? Pop by here and stay connected with us via twitter, facebook and instagram.
xoxo!

Jesse & Cale

My hand at illustration was challenged earlier this summer when a pal asked me for a watercolour illustration of her and her future husband for their wedding invites. With the habit of never saying no, I happily agreed with fully knowing that I was never good at watercolour and have never called myself an illustrator. The couple was very pleased with the final results, phew, and so was I!

Congrats Jesse and Cale! Wishing you a lifetime and more of happiness and love.

Photos coming soon… I’ve been quite tardy on shooting my work! But we printed this invitation on a beautiful natural felt paper to get the watercolour paper effect. Beauty.

Wedding Website: Sneak Peak

wedding website, mickleting, wedding

Well this is exciting! I love wedding websites, but (as a designer) I hate the templated ones. With the help of my good pal Karl from Hexapixel Media and my super quick design (right Karlos?), we’ll be launching this baby within the next couple of weeks! It’s super simple and to the point. We have quite a few family members and great friends from the South Pacific that will be joining us in Canada for our wee wedding. We want to show them that Edmonton has a lot of great shops and eats, not to mention it’s very pretty! It’s no New Zealand, but it should do.

Hee Haw!

Remember Hee Haw?

Hee Haw Collective was at it again! This years theme, MEAT! YUM! I couldn’t be a vegetarian if I tried. Although… for me, it’s really all about the sauce… I could just eat sauce, but that’s just weird.
Be sure to keep your eyes peeled within the next couple of weeks, we’re going to be hanging these posters on the 6th!

Illustrated “How to”

If you don’t already know this, I do have a full time job at a wee design studio/agency called The Met Agency. Every few weeks each of us does a blog post. This week I decided to do a “how to,” and in this case, a how to grow an avocado! Janet and I have been busy nurturing our little forest of avocados, we have 5, each of them with a unique name and some of them with extra love notes for growth encouragement. I encourage you to try this “how to,” it’s so fun watching these little guys grow! I’m so in love with all of them!

instadoodle

If you follow me on instagram, you’ll likely know that I post pics of tonnes of my doodles. It’s my favourite thing to do. I love illustrating type!

This little angry panda was done with a dark grey brush pen. I’ve just gotten into brush pens. And man, they are hard to use. It’s a struggle, but practice makes perfect right?

It’s true… I started my own hashtag for my wedding. I need to keep track ya know? 🙂

Command Love

Mike and I have a wedding venue! There is light! With our wedding now slightly over a year away, we’re slowly getting our stuff together. I’m of the mind set that if we do little things each week, each month, we won’t get this giant bill next September. Am I right? Or am I just getting too excited to start my wedding tidbits?!

Regardless, I designed some wedding seals from waxseals.com for a wedding invitation that I designed earlier in June and I was just so tickled with them, I jumped the gun and designed and ordered some for our wedding! I have a look and a feel for our wedding in my mind, but have yet to actually get anything down on paper. My future last name will start with an “H,” my least favourite letter to draw… I came up with almost 10 seal designs with an “H” incorporated into it, but none were great. Mike and I couldn’t agree on a design. So we scrapped it all together/I scrapped it all together and came up with command love. Simple. Cute. To the point. Pun to MAC users. And to be honest, it wasn’t until I opened the box that I thought, what do PC users use as command? Is it alt? That little window icon? I can’t even tell you the last time I used a PC keyboard. Oops. My apologies in advance for those who receive our invite and don’t get it. Or is the command symbol well known enough for everyone to get it? This is why we user test, isn’t it…

Too late! Below are our beautiful gold seals for our envelopes which I don’t know the colour of, and for the invites that are yet to be designed. But this little detail just melts my heart.

GIVEAWAY!

Screen Printing with Whiteout Workshop

My pal Janet was real keen to take a screen printing class that Whiteout Workshop was offering over a weekend. It’s been years (…really over a decade) since I’ve last indulged into the smell of thick screening inks and photo emulsion. I thought hey, why not, just another hobby to gather right? I’m such a paper fiend and desire to be a print guru one day, and screen printing just has an effect that offset can’t mimic. The way the ink really sits on top of your uncoated paper. The textures that it creates with each and every pull. I’ve found a new love.

Janet and I had such a fantastic weekend! You can really see it in these pics below. Look how happy we are?!

If you’re wanting to try something different, if you’re wanting to expand your printing knowledge check out Whiteout Workshop. I was so impressed by Natasha (owner and creator), with her willingness to teach and share her knowledge. Most artists like to keep their secrets to themselves, but Natasha was so awesome to work with!

Screen Printing with Whiteout Workshop

Naturally I was pretty scared on what to print. I knew for sure I wanted to print on paper, but what? I’ve never personally printed much of my hand lettering so all my files of doodles and words came in handy. I printed four hand lettering illustrations: Let’s Build Mountains, Let’s Share our Hearts, Let’s Collect Memories, and lastly (and probably a favorite) Hey You’re Awesome.

Natasha took the pics below of me screening and flooding. The hot pink was incredible to say the least. This was day two of screening, I wish I had my hands on that hot pink on day one, it was just so electric and really smooth to work with.

Screen Printing with Whiteout Workshop

Black was a safe colour to print with. It was smooth, runny and easy to pull. Once I got started I couldn’t stop. All I wanted to do was pull more prints. It either went really fast or I used an excessive amount of paper (definitely the latter). Gold was another favorite of mine. Everyone knows how much I love gold and now I got the opportunity to print with gold. Swoon. I loved the texture the metallic ink laid on the paper.

Because we had two days, I had a really good opportunity to screen layers. I wish I had done more layered work because the outcome is just so much more appealing (on most of them). The simplicity of one layer is clean and modern. Once another layer is added it became chaos and magic for my eyes!

The last image with the flying geese and the hand lettering is a Janet and Justine collaboration and by far my favorite from the weekend. Only two prints were made, one for me and one for Janet, pretty much like best friend bracelets but prints 😉

Screen Printing with Whiteout Workshop

I am now the proud owner of probably over one hundred prints and that’s just crazy. I posted a giveaway on Instagram (@pooting) where I’ll be sending prints to America, Singapore and one locally here in Edmonton. I really enjoyed the feedback from the contest so I’ll be conducting another giveaway on my Facebook page within the next week. So stay tuned.

thank.you

A stunning bride asked me to create simple and elegant thank you cards with the beautiful line “my heart is full of love.” How pretty is that! Black ink on white card. With a line like that, less is more.
